ANSWER TWO OF THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:
1) Historian and NAACP founder W.E.B. Du Bois wrote of Reconstruction: “The slave went free; stood a brief moment in the sun; then moved back again toward slavery.” Evaluate Du Bois’s claim by identifying three goals African Americans and their allies had during Reconstruction, their relative success during Reconstruction itself, and to what extent these goals were achieved (or not) by the 1930s? (This essay should discuss the Reconstruction Amendments, Jim Crow Laws, and Plessy v. Ferguson, among other topics).
2) In the latter half of the 20th century and today, Native American peoples have experienced profound population recovery and reasserted their sovereign treaty rights. However, they endured particularly dark times in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In a five-paragraph essay, describe the challenges Native American peoples survived between the 1870s and early 1900s. Pay particular attention to specific conflicts, government legislation, boarding schools, and court cases.
