Research Exercises are an opportunity for students to identify examples of concepts in class
in current or recent events (within the past 6 months) and apply the models used in class to
analyze these events.
• There are three Research Exercise assigned during the quarter and the lowest grade will be
dropped (missing or late assignments count as a drop).
• These assignments should be 700-1000 words (2-3 pages double spaced) long, and will be
graded based on originality, demonstrated understanding of the relevant course material,
appropriate application of course concepts to the current/recent event, and insightful analysis.
Sources (including the textbook) must be clearly cited and listed in a bibliography.
• The first research exercise is a group assignment to be completed in groups of two or three,
the second is an individual assignment, and the third can be completed individually or in a
group. For group papers, students may form their own groups or ask the instructor to assign
them to a group.
• Students who submit at least two exercises on time can submit an updated publish during Finals
Week (if the first publish was a group paper, the updated publish should be written by the same
group; otherwise, it should cover a different current event). The grade for that assignment
will be an average of the first and second publish grades.
• Late work will be penalized 10% per day.
• All facts and ideas MUST be cited. All quotes MUST be in quotation marks. It should be in
essay form, with an intro, body, conclusion, and bibliography (in any format). Section
headings are fine.
• Any ideas from class should be appropriately cited, including page numbers, for ideas that
come from a book (including the textbook). Any quotes should be in quotation marks.
Quotes, or near-quotes with minor changes, that are not in quotation marks are plagiarism.
• All evidence should be appropriately sourced. The reader should be able to easily verify any
factual assertions.
• The Research Exercise will be graded based on originality, demonstrated understanding of
the relevant course material, appropriate application of course concepts to empirical
evidence, and insightful analysis.
